Qualifications
BSc (Hons Class II Div 1), University of Sydney, 1966: This was awarded for a thesis on the geology of the Cheesemans Creek district, about 25km west of Orange. The study included a geological map and concentrated on Ordovician to Silurian petrology and biostratigraphy, and Cainozoic volcanics and sediments.
MSc, University of Sydney, 1971: This was by thesis and was awarded for a study of the geology and biostratigraphy of the Forbes – Bogan Gate district. The structural units established in this work have much influenced thinking on mineralization of the Forbes-Parkes-Peak Hill-Tomingley gold belt.
PhD, Macquarie University, 1991: This thesis was on the biostratigraphy used to resolve many of the stratigraphic problems associated with the Cobar copper and gold field.
Short Courses
Software courses including ACCESS, ARCVIEW, ER MAPPER; and refresher type courses on petrography, airphoto interpretation and mineralization.
Employment with Geological Survey of NSW
1963-1966: Cadet geologist, Geological Survey of NSW.
Vacation employment included experience in the then Coal Division, most of which involved coal logging in the Southern Sydney Basin, and in the Regional Mapping Division doing air photo interpretation of the Singleton 1:250 000 sheet.
1967-1968: Appointed Technical Assistant to the Curator, Geological & Mining Museum.
The duties included answering public enquiries and identifying samples submitted by prospectors and geological consultants, as well as determining which samples required additional testing/analysis as part of the then free assay service.
1968-1983: Palaeontologist, Geological & Mining Museum (after 1969, Specialist Services and Applied Research Section).
This position provided a palaeontological age dating service for the Geological Survey, mostly in support of the regional mapping program but with subsequent input into the metallogenic mapping program. Other duties included designing palaeontological and geological displays, even after splitting the staff into separate research and display divisions.
- For a three month period in 1980 -- Seconded to the Head Office as Scientific Information Officer. This position was a point of first contact with the public for both counter and mail enquiries and included supervision of counter staff. I was responsible for preparing written responses to various enquiries which covered mineral occurrences, mining legislation as well as straight-forward geology.
- In 1981-1982 -- Again seconded to head office, this time for approximately eighteen months in Non-Metallics Section, to complete mapping of the Wollongong - Port Hacking 1:100 000 sheet and coordinate all of the explanatory notes.
1983-2004: Senior Geologist.
Promoted to Senior Geologist in Specialist Services and Applied Research Section. Following a restructure in 1983, was transferred to Southern Region / Metallics section. Then following a further restructure some eighteen months later, was transferred to North West regional section.
In 1987 my relocation to the Orange Regional Office established the first Geological Survey permanent presence there.
2004-2005: Acting Chief Geologist in charge of regional mapping programs.
2005-present: After passing retiring age, Lawrence continues working with the Geological Survey as a contract geological mapper and supplier of stratigraphic services.
