Overview
Geological Survey of NSW 1970-2004
The main direction of research was investigating ore deposit models using thermodynamics, geochemistry and petrology. This included magmatic, volcanogenic and structurally controlled ore deposits (Cu, Au, Pt, diamonds).
There was a major effort (1984-1991) to create and populate a database on the Petrology Collection, currently with 80,000 samples and the largest and fastest growing collection in Department of Mineral Resources. Database permits retrieval of relevant thin sections in seconds, and is available on the intranet.
Larry spent about 4 years in Regional Mapping (2 years in the 1970s, and 2 years in the 1990s).
Petrological research over the last 5 years with the Geological Survey included
- Mineral inclusions in NSW diamonds to determine PT of formation (Raman spectra, computer modelling),
- geochemical interpretation of garnets found during exploration for diamonds in the Bingara district
- metamorphic maps over selected 1:250 000 maps (Bathurst, Dubbo, Forbes, Cargelligo, Goulburn, and underway on Cobar and Bourke
- support for Exploration NSW resource assessment and mapping
Research Associate, Australian Museum (Minerals) 2004-
Larry is presently involved in research on NSW diamonds, and alluvial diamonds from Kalimantan, the chemistry of minerals in xenoliths recovered from diamondiferous diatremes near Newcastle, and is compiling catalogue information on the Australian Museum Rock Collection.
Larry regularly acts as a critical reviewer of research articles for international research journals, and was the Australian regional editor (1981-1992) for a new journal "Advances in Physical Geochemistry", published by Springer-Verlag. He is a member of the Geological Society of Australia, the Geodiversity Committee of the Australian Museum, and The Society for Economic Geologists. He was recently invited to make a plenary presentation on his diamond research at a special session at the forth coming Geological Association of Canada Conference (Montreal, Canada, 2006).
